While Search Engine Optimization and Internet Advertising is all the rage, there is still a valuable role for print brochures, advertisements and direct mail.
Printed pieces have real-world tactile features that cant be duplicated on a computer - the scent of paper, the gloss of coating, metallic inks, shimmering paper, the weight in your hands of something real. Paper can be caressed - keyboards, well, none that I know of but Im pretty sure Sony is working on it.
But back to the role of printed marketing. I take more joy in receiving a card or invitation sent through the mail. E-mail invites are nice, but its like a taste of frosting when Id rather have the cake (and eat it, too).
I actually pay attention to printed ads because they have no irritating animations like seizure-inducing blinking banner ads. New ads dont pop-up out of a magazine to interrupt my concentration. I dont need to reconfigure the magazine or newspaper to prevent such things from happening.
Yes, I love technology, but not as much as print, you see. But I still love technology, always and forever. Always and forever.
