How I Work: The Design Process
1. Client Interview
I ask clients many questions about their needs, ideas, and wants regarding a new logo. Most people are too busy to fill out any long questionnaires so I simply pose my interview questions during phone calls and meetings. Next, to show I listened, I send a Creative Brief that clarifies the needs the finished logo design must fulfill as well as the creative direction to use.
2. Research
An important key to create an effective, unique logo identity that stands out, is to perform solid industry research and competitive analysis. The goal is to see who is out there, what we’re up against, and spot any trends or cliché symbols to avoid.
Also, there is nothing wrong with showing me other logos you like. That’s encouraged, in fact, especially logos that are well-done and inspiring. But we must avoid the “me too” syndrome of wanting a logo that looks “just like that one.” The whole point of thoughtful logo design is to create an identity that is unique and custom-made just for you.
3. Concepting
I sketch and draw and use my creative powers to generate potential logo concepts and ideas. When I have enough freehand concepts with good potential, I take them to my computer for further refinement and professional polish. Sometimes inspiration strikes quickly and “the right“ logo just happens. But generally, taking a good concept to great requires alternating periods of design and experimentation with breaks and quiet reflection. Those “A-ha!” moments really do happen, and can happen anytime.
4. Presentation
After taking my best ideas from my pool of concepts, I can present them in person, but often it’s faster and easier to e-mail them. Usually, the initial designs are in black and white. A solid logo design must be able to work in black and white and it’s easier to solve design challenges such as readability or composition with the absence of any distracting colors.
I provide an explanation of each logo design and how its features express the values, principles and personality set forth in the Creative Brief.
5. Font/Type Concepts
Choosing the right font(s) for your logo is of utmost importance. I typically show anywhere from twelve to 24, maybe even 30 different font possibilities. I research and consider hundreds to thousands of fonts to make sure you have several good choices.
6. Color Concepts
It’s easy to want to use colors that are your favorites and of course you don’t want to use colors you absolutely hate. But it’s also important to use color theory to make rational, practical decisions about what colors to use in your brand identity. I will guide you through the potential meaning and personality of different color combinations in the spectrum. I also explore numerous versions of your logo design coloring the design elements in multiple ways.
7. Revisions
I’m pretty flexible here, and I’m confident that if we need more time for revisions than originally expected, we can work out a fair agreement.
8. The Final Logo Design Delivered
When the logo design is finalized, I give you digital files such as .ai, .eps, .psd, .pdf, .jpg and .tif. You’ll have files that are easily resizable as well as high resolution, ready for use in print, on promo items, or on a website.
9. Payment
Typically, project payments are split into two halves, a 50% deposit to start and 50% due upon completion.
10. Business Cards, Letterhead, etc.
After the logo design project is complete, we can continue working together to shape your brand with business card design, letterhead, envelopes, and consulting for brochures, sales sheets and a website.
